Blackbird Special Sprint Car. We have a 1935 vintage sprint car for sale. Built in 1935 by Johnny Ulesky, it was known as HAL Special No. 16. Was also know as the Blackbird Special #16 and #3. Ulesky won the A.A.A. Union Speedway Championship in 1937 - 1939. It was sold in 1945 to Johnny Matera and was then known as the Matera Hal. Matera owned it from 1945 - 1958. During Matera's ownership, other drivers included Walt Ader, Frank Bailey, Mark Light, Hank Rogers, Sr., Lee Walard and Buster Warnke. In 1983 the car was bought by Bill Sherk of PA for restoration but in 1984 the car was purchased by my Dad, Don Heck, also from PA. It sat for several years and was then restored and has been on display at the Eastern Museum Of Motor Racing for over 10 years. It is was restored as close to the original condition using pictures and documentation acquired. The Hal Motor is present. My Dad never fired the motor after restoration. We are not sure the reason. As far as we know, the motor is 90-95% complete. We believe piston and crank are present and magneto present. Not sure if water pump is there. Since my Dad has passed away, we are unable to find out the info from him. Sorry the pics aren't very good. We would love to have it find a new owner that could get it back on the track where it belongs. We have documentation and lots of pics from when it was on the tracks.
